Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. A refrigerant is a liquid that is stored in your AC coils, which help cool and dehumidify the indoor air. If there weren’t refrigerants, there wouldn’t be air conditioning. For years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be legal to produce as a result of its destructive impact to the environment. Introducing R-410A To reduce environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now designed to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and is free of chlorine, which means it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel at ease using this refrigerant in Bakersfield because it’ll help make your AC operate efficiently, reliably and quietly, and provide the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was made before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You probably should think about upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is completely phased out. The old refrigerant will become hard to find in the next few years, costing you more to operate your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Hillcrest Air Conditioning & Plumbing work with R-410A, so you can rest assured we have an AC or heat pump you can better rely on. Be sure to refrain from using”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
